ASTRO A40 + MixAmp Pro TR Review
Sat 6th Aug 2016 - 9:26am: Gaming
Astro Gaming is one of the bigest names when it comes to high-quality gaming headsets. A good headset is vital for professional players who are frequently competing in loud tournament environments. Here, I'll be reviewing the latest ASTRO A40 TR headset, MixAmp TR and the all new Mod Kit.
Having owned an A40 headset for a number of years, I can honestly say that it's one of the very best on the market. Since the release of the A40, there haven't been many design changes. Lightweigt and durable plastic protects the cables in the earcup which enables them to be turned sideways to lay completely flat. The plush, cloth-covered padding on the ears makes the A40 TR make it incredibly comfortable for long gaming sessions.
The headset microphone is one of excellent quality. It is completely removable and thanks to the magnetic tags on the earcups, I can connect the mic on either the left or the right side of the headset.
The A40 TR comes in 2 different versions. One for the Xbox One and one for the PS4/PS3. Having tested the Playstation version, the connection was simple and instant. The headphones received crystal clear sound with no need to change any of the console settings.
The MixAmp has been a staple for all ASTRO headsets. The MixAmp TR includes plenty of connectivity and control options. Whether you want to hear the game sound more than your teammates voices, the MixAmp offers total control. The back of the MixAmp holds a micro USB port, an optical input and 3.5mm stream output, making it easy for me to mix my headset feed into a stream or recording.
Like previous editions of the MixAmp, the front consists of a 3.5mm input for the headset and 2 ports for daisy-chaining several MixAmps together. Having tried this, I can say that the communication is as near to instant as it gets, making it ideal for use in a tournament setting.
Having seen great reviews on the Mod Kit I couldn't wait to give it a test. The padded headband in the Mod Kit is made from synthetic leather and you can feel a noticable difference. Using it for several hours, it feels much more comfortable than the standard padded headband. The voice isolating microphone is a great addition to the headset when it comes to communication. The microphone also isolates any outside interferrence, allowing your teammates to hear your communication with ease.
Also included are the closed back speaker tags which turn the headset into a closed back headest, sealing off any additional sound from the outside. I can say that these have made a significant difference when I play Call of Duty as I can hear the enemies with much more clarity than other headsets. Combined with the leather ear cushions, there is very little sound leaking in or out of the headset, leaving you totally immersed in the game.
The ASTRO A40 TR Headset, MixAmp TR and Mod Kit are ideal whether you are just a casual gamer or you're looking for a high quality headset, specifically designed with tournament play in mind. Combined with the Mod Kit the ASTRO A40 TR is one of the very best gaming headsets on the market.
